Imagine, day after day, filling up your car with the wrong fuel. It might chug along for a while, but it wouldn’t be long until the warning sign came on and eventually, it would breakdown. Despite our best intentions, the quality of our journey can be diminished by a constant need for roadside assistance.

The same can be said for our bodies. Without effective fuel, we aren’t empowering our minds or bodies to face life’s inevitable challenges with vitality, resilience and ease. As we age, our bodies don’t bounce back the same way they used to. It becomes increasingly important to nourish ourselves with healthy and nutritious foods.

Most of us know ‘good’ food from ‘bad’ food, however, there are some foods that will supercharge your diet and provide you with important nutrients that your body will love you for. Here are a few foods you can incorporate into your diet for greater wellbeing and vitality as you age:

Walnuts

Nature’s brain food: walnuts, have higher antioxidant activity than any other common nut. Despite being high in calories, walnuts provide wonderful vitamins, minerals, fibre and fats that help support your body as you age. Research also shows walnuts can help lower LDL (or bad) cholesterol while keeping levels of healthier HDL cholesterol constant.

Grapefruit

Rich in spermidine, grapefruits have major blood pressure lowering power. Maintaining low blood pressure is essential for good cardiovascular health. Try adding grapefruit to your fruit salads and smoothies to help keep your vitals regular and strong.

Maca

Maca is a common ingredient in Peruvian cooking and can be ground up into a powder and added to meals or smoothies. It promotes skin healing and regeneration because of its abundance of trace minerals including B6, niacin, and riboflavin.

Avocado

Consider adding avocado to your diet for healthy fats and nutrients.  According to a recent study by The British Journal of Sports Medicine, individuals suffering from osteoarthritis disease reported short-term improvements in pain reduction and mobility, showcasing it’s healing properties!

Green Tea

Green tea originated in China and is wonderful for your health due to its rich antioxidant properties which help to defend your body from sun damage and pollution. Next time you’re feeling a little run down, brew yourself a cup, and it will do wonders for your health.
